London is served by three major airports, Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted,
and two smaller airports, Luton, and London City. (Some would argue
that Biggin Hill and Southend Airports should also be on the list,
but these are really small). London is also served by many local,
regional, national and international rail services. London has a
number of central mainline station which include London Waterloo
(where Eurostar arrives from Paris and Brussels), London Victoria,
London Bridge, London Liverpool Street, London Paddington, London
Kings Cross, London St Pancras, London Euston, London Fenchurch
Street, London Cannon Street and London Charing Cross. You are able
to use the London Underground (subway) network to travel between
any of the mainline station if necessary.
If you are arriving in London by rail or coach, it is pretty easy, you
are in central London when you arrive. If you are arriving in London
by coach you will be arriving at London Victoria coach station,
right in the heart of London. However arriving by air is not so
simple.
How to get to central London from the airport:
From Heathrow Airport, there are many options for getting
to Central London. Heathrow Express is a quick rail line taking just 15
minutes to Paddington mainline station. It is quick, it is nice, it is
comfortable, but it is also expensive. Only use if you are on business....
Another option is the tube. It is frequent, and goes right through the
heart of London, but can get VERY crowded, and not the easiest thing to
use if you are new to London. Bus is slow, but cheap, and Taxi, well bring
lots of money if you want that kind of comfort, will be very expensive.
If you are new to London and staying within the central area, I suggest
Heathrow Express to Paddington and then Taxi. Is expensive, but should
be trouble free.
From Gatwick, there are a number of options. The best
option is train. Trains operate very frequently to either London Bridge
or London Victoria, both mainline rail stations are within the heart to
London and have Taxi ranks and good transport connections. You can also
take the bus which is cheaper, and taxi if you have money to burn.
From Stansted, there are also a number of options. Similar
to Gatwick, the best option is train. Trains from Stansted airport arrive
into London Liverpool Street which is in the City part (financial district)
of Central London. Taxi and other transport connections are then available.
From Stansted you can also catch buses or an expensive taxi.
From Luton, Train services take you directly to London
Kings Cross Thameslink and London Bridge where other transport connections
are then possible. Luton also has buses to central London and a Taxi ranks.
From London City Airport. Unlike the other airports,
London City is actually in Docklands and far nearer the centre of town
than the others. Despite this (at present) there is no rail connection
actually to the airport. The best idea is to take the bus to Liverpool
Street mainline station and then change to other transport options.
